College Crime Statistics: Students Reality Check

The typical image of a rapist is a crazed maniac who jumps out of the bushes, brandishes a knife or gun and forces a woman to have sex with him. Images like this are strong and lasting but they mask the essential fact that most rapes are committed by acquaintances, someone you know, husband, relative, friend, perhaps a boyfriend, date rape.

This false image lives on because few rapes by acquaintances are ever reported: in fact, as the college statistics demonstrated above, those involved often do not recognize that a rape has occurred. Most rapes occur in the victim's home or dorm room, the offender's home or dorm room, or a vehicle.

Many times a woman will not want to confront her assailant, for fear of getting a bad grade or losing respect within the campus/community, or losing a job.

Women sometimes look towards themselves, asking what they did wrong, therefore shifting the blame away from where it really should be.

Womens Self Defense:

The best way to protect yourself from college crime is to be aware of your surroundings and the people that you're with. Don't ignore feelings of uneasiness you may feel around a certain man, and don't worry about being rude or unfriendly.

If someone is making you uncomfortable, don't let them intimidate you, and don't be afraid to let them know what your limits are is the essence of womens self defense.

Keep in mind that whether you know the man, if it is a friend, if they assault you, it is rape and it can be reported.

The legal definition of rape is a victim having sexual intercourse against her will and without her consent. (2) Sexual assault is defined as a sexual encounter other than intercourse (such as oral and anal sex) against the victim's will and without his or her consent. In many states only a woman can be legally raped by a man, but the FBI estimates that 10 percent of all sexual assault victims are men. The victim does not have to be threatened with a dangerous weapon or be injured for an incident to be considered rape. Coercion or threat of force of violence are sufficient.

The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

From College Crime: Pepper Spray History...in the beginning

Historically, the use of natural elements for personal security weapons has been recorded over a hundred years ago. Using the essence of a hot pepper as a weapon is not a new age idea.

The ancient Chinese put ground cayenne pepper in rice paper and flung it in the face of their opponents, and Japanese ninjas used ground pepper to disable opponents as well. During Japan's Tukagawa Empire, police used the "metsubishi," a box used to blow pepper into the eyes of captured political opponents.

The pepper spray products on this site represent some of the best choices for size, shape, and potential stopping power found on the market for womens self defense. Fortunately today, we don't have to be a "ninja" to possess and use these powerful personal defensive sprays as personal security weapons.

The message here from College Crime is "personal safety first". Womens self defense encourages women to "Always Be Prepared". Be aware of your surroundings. Learn a few good physical skills for self protection ( First Visit ). Womens self defense products are now easy to obtain, so carry a safe and easy to use can of pepper spray as shown on this page.

Designed for women, lipstick pepper spray is another deceptively subtle way to carry the protection you need into any environment where you might find yourself.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The actual physical techniques that make up the self-defense moves are not difficult to learn, the basic skills are not always instinctive. By familiarizing yourself with a few good simple physical moves, you can help reduce your anxiety over the possibility of an attack and enable yourself to deal with aggression when threatened.

First and foremost, learning self-defense is about learning how to avoid being targeted as the victim. Be Safe!
