Personal Safety Awareness Is
Lesson One!

Successful Self-defense is not about winning a fight, but avoiding it!

Personal Safety Awareness: All good women's self defense programs should stress Crime Prevention Information. The simplest and best defense against assaults is to be more aware of your environment or surroundings.

Ideally, a good women's self defense class encourages you to think in terms of options and choices, helps you to develop your personal safety awareness and assertiveness skills, and provides you with basic self defense physical skills/moves that you can safely practice at home.

Self defense statistics will help you to realize the importance of developing a personal safety awareness plan now. Remember, statistics are not designed to scare you, but prepare you for possibilities.

You will also find additional statistical information in the college crime section. Within the College Crime section you will find information and resources on a date rape drug, as well as on stalking and stalkers, and domestic violence awareness. Most of us have a job, so I have included a page on workplace violence.

The safety awareness information found within this site is an outgrowth of the public school programs being taught throughout California.

Reducing violence on campus and promoting safety for students are the objectives of the Self Defense For Life Program that Becky Valentine, a physical educator, and brother Bill Valentine, a fifth degree black belt, recently taught at another Cal Poly Physical Education Workshop, San Luis Obispo.

The California state educational framework is supposed to include a unit of self-defense training at the 7th and 10th grade levels. Conflict resolution techniques, awareness, fun type combative games to develop motor skills, exploring healthy relationships, and good basic physical skills are all part of the Self Defense For Life Program. Safer children make healthy adults!

This section on self defense statistics contains information on sexual abuse of women and girls, as well as resources for victims. Also, how to find public information on locating sex offenders in your neighborhood with Megan's Law. The page on Megan's Law will help you locate sex offenders in your own neighborhood. Don't be surprised!

Lets begin women's self defense with the first lesson on personal safety, a warning from a rapist.
